Phil and the team are wished ‘bon voyage’ by a school local to The Walton Centre.

Armed and ready with bike and lycra, today is the day Jepson Holt Chairman, Philip Jepson, sets out on an epic charity bike ride through France. Departing Calais this morning, Phil and the team are embarking on a 600-mile ride over the course of 6 days. Upon reaching Mount Ventoux next Wednesday the team will rest for a day before attempting the 6,273 ft climb to the summit.

Phil and the team’s efforts are all in aid of The Walton Centre, based in Liverpool. The Centre specialises in neurology and neurosurgery and is the only specialist neuroscience trust in the country. The team are raising funds towards a new residential block for the Centre, helping families to stay close to their loved ones at difficult times.

We will have updates on the Jepson Holt website throughout the next seven days, keeping track of their progress and their fundraising. Don’t forget: the fundraising is the most important part of this ride and if you feel you are able to contribute then Phil’s Just Giving page is still open and accepting donations of any amount.

Yesterday Phil and the team had a pre-trip send-off at The Walton Centre itself, with local school children turning out to wish them well on their journey. Having travelled down to Folkestone overnight, the team were on the early morning Eurostar over to Calais where the journey began today in the late morning.

Today and tomorrow will be the longest days of cycling for the team, with today’s schedule packing in 185 kilometres (115 miles) of travel. Setting off from Calais, the team will first head through the beautiful parc naturel régional des Caps et Marais d’Opale area for around 50km. Later in the day the intrepid cyclists will keep to the West of Lens, as they head South-East, finishing the day at Saint-Quentin. Resting there overnight, the team will need careful preparation for tomorrow, which is the longest day of cycling on the trip.

We’ll have another update on their progress tomorrow but, until then, you can follow Phil on twitter here or Jepson Holt here. Both will have updates when they can and you can follow other riders by using the #calais2ventoux hashtag.
