The Road to the Top: Jepson Holt to Feature at University Panel Event

20 Nov 2013

Jepson Holt will be represented on a panel event designed to give students at Newcastle University Law School the opportunity to plan for their future in the industry.

The event, which will see Jepson Holt Director, Matthew Draper, return to his place of study as an alumni, is designed to give the lawyers of the future an insight into their potential career. Topics up for discussion will include the state of the industry now, as well as how law graduates can diversify into other careers, something which Matthew is well qualified to cover.

MattTo be held on 6th December, the event will take a round table format, with Matthew joined by four fellow alumni from the law school. The aim is to give current students an idea of what it takes to both progress in the legal profession and to use their qualifications to pursue other professions, if they so desire.

Matthew will give a short introduction and then field questions from the attendant students. As an alumni of the Newcastle course and a professional in the legal industry, Matthew plans to contribute to the event’s aims to educate students on the wide variety of careers available to them, upon finishing the course.

For those who want to stay specifically within the legal industry, it is important to gain as much knowledge as possible about their potential career from researching typical career paths to recognising the type of firm they want to work for. Those who wish to remain in the industry will have to be increasingly passionate about the law itself, as well as have a keen focus on the type of position they wish to attain.

Alternatively, there will also be those who decide to pursue a career outside of the industry, on the back of a strong qualification. For those individuals, Matthew will emphasise the benefits and quality of the qualification they will leave with, including the transferable skills they will have learnt regarding management, negotiation, advocacy and general commercial skills.

The event will end with students having the opportunity to submit ad-hoc questions to the panel, before an evening of networking, where the experts will be available to deliver more informal advice.
