What are you still doing here?

15 Jan 2012

Grey, cold, wet January morning.
The economic news is depressing and no one can quite see the light at the end of the tunnel.
At one time English qualified lawyers were pretty much stuck in England because re qualifying was difficult and the only overseas jurisdiction we could work in without re qualifying was New Zealand.
Law firms were very much domestic UK businesses.
No more.
All large firms have international offices.
English law is used across the world as the jurisdiction of choice in commercial contracts.
It is easier to re qualify where you really need to.
Firms are much more relaxed about using lawyers who are not qualified in the local jurisdiction.
All of this has opened up the world to UK lawyers and there are now a range of exciting opportunities overseas.
So what are you still doing here?
Some of the potential destinations sound dramatic. China. Singapore. Australia, but there are real opportunities in places where the economies are still moving and the future looks exciting.
Maybe this is the time to think about options which in the past would not be something you would have considered.
